Regular physical activity is a major component to a healthy life, but the modern world can make it very challenging to achieve. Between nine-to-five work schedules and the easy alternatives offered by technology, finding the time or will for a lengthy workout is often beyond reach to many people.
Thankfully, even a minimum amount of exercise can have measurable benefits to your health, and there are many ways you can easily fit brief but vital activity into your everyday routine - here's how.
1. Incorporate physical into your daily commute
Depending on where you live, you should consider utilizing bike lanes or walking trails to and from work. Even public transportation offers a greater degree of movement than heading straight to you car. Although it may take a little longer and require some planning, this method guarantees regular exercise, to say nothing of the gas savings!
2. Perform your errands by walking or cycling
If you have errands to run close to your house, why not opt for a walk or bike ride? Depending on the weather and what you have to do, it is often easier to just get around on foot than to deal with congestion, parking, or unneeded gas expenses. For groceries and such, you can always invest in a lightweight cart or basket for your bicycle.
3. Make the most of your breaks
Whether it is a fifteen-minute coffee break or an hour-long lunch, take whatever opportunity you can to get a good stretch or stroll in. Even standing is comparatively better than just sitting at the desk. If you can spare the time, consider picking up the food you order rather than having it delivered.
4. Avoid shortcuts
The everyday conveniences of modern life are great, but they often prevent us from getting the exercise we need. Instead of elevators, try taking the stairs; rather than parking in front of the story, park far to get a walk in. It might not seem like much, but over time these little bits of exercise make the difference.
5. Do chores
Whether it is tidying up your bedroom or cleaning the yard, frame chores as just another way to get physical activity into your day. If for any reason you can't hit the gym or get a run outside, than keeping busy around the house is the next best thing you can do (and needless to say you will be getting some necessary work done!)
These may seem like insignificant activities, but in the aggregate they will have noticeable benefits to your lifelong health.
